Commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

January 17 is the date we commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr this year. Congregations and individuals are encouraged to find ways to mark this day in worship and in educational and service opportunities. The ELCA provides many resources related to commemorating the day, and the Nebraska Synod’s own RARE (Racism Awareness, Reconciliation and Engagement) Team provides multiple resources for individual and congregational study and conversation.

The ELCA is a church committed to confronting and overcoming racism in all of its forms, and of becoming a truly inclusive church. These efforts begin with individuals and congregations sharing study and starting conversations—sometimes difficult but always important conversations. There’s no better way to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. than to commit oneself to take action to further the work of ensuring that all are truly welcome into the fellowship that we share.
