Planning to Spend Your Summer with Matthew’s Gospel Emmaus, May 2023

Program Description

From Holy Trinity Sunday on June 1 through Labor Day Sunday/Pentecost 14 on September 3,
the gospel lesson for each and every Sunday will be from Matthew. Through this Emmaus
offering, each of these Matthean periscopes will be examined to help better equip people who
will be preaching on Luke throughout the summer of 2023.

Instructor

The Reverend Dr. Rick Carlson serves as co-lead pastor of First Lutheran Church in Kearney,
Nebraska in partnership with his wife, the Reverend Dr. Michelle Carlson. Prior to being called
to Kearney, Pastor Carlson served parishes in northern Minnesota and was a professor of the
New Testament at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg for twenty-seven years. He is
a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, Wartburg Theological Seminary in
Dubuque, Iowa, and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond Virginia.

Class Details

Format: This class will be offered both in-person and simultaneously online. Power point slides
will be available to those registered ahead of time. Opportunities will be available for online
participants to ask questions or provide input via Zoom.

Date: Thursday, May 11, 10:00 to noon and 12:30 to 2:30 pm CT, 9:00-11:00 and 11:30-1:30

The class will be held at First Lutheran Church in Kearney, Nebraska. The morning session will
run from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The afternoon session will run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Lunch will
be available for those attending the class in person for an additional $15/person

Target Audience: This class is open to all but is particularly geared for pastors, deacons, PMAs
and others who will be preaching during the summer of 2023.

Cost: Course fee is $40/person. Lunch for those on site is an additional $15/person.
Registration deadline: May 4. No refunds after May 4, 2023.
