RARE Fall Discussion Group

You’re invited to join members of the Synod’s R.A.R.E. (Racial Awareness, Reconciliation and Engagement) group for a fall discussion of the “1619” podcast series. “1619” is a five-part New York Times audio series that was released in 2020 and examines the long shadow of American slavery, from the time enslaved people arrived on our shores through 400 years of history to the present day.

We will meet for six sessions on Thursdays at 7 p.m. CT, beginning October 5 and concluding November 9. Participants are expected to have listened to each episode prior to the Thursday discussion (episodes are 30-42 minutes long) and be prepared to discuss together as a group.

Podcast episodes are available here and also on Spotify. We will include this link in your registration confirmation email as well.

Register for the “1619” Zoom discussion series HERE. You only need to register one time; the link you receive when you register will be the same link you will use to join all six sessions. Attend whichever sessions you are able to make!

For an overview of the podcast series, watch this trailer (the trailer is for the Hulu miniseries based on the podcast series, but it will give you a good snapshot of what the “1619 Project” is about; if you have Hulu, feel free to watch the miniseries as an accompaniment to our discussion!).

The questions we will be using for our discussions can be found here (you don’t need to review the questions prior to each discussion, but feel free to do so if you wish).

We look forward to digging into this compelling series with you!

Warmly,

The R.A.R.E. team

Our Mission:
R.A.R.E. (Racial Awareness, Reconciliation, and Engagement) is a committee of the Nebraska Synod ELCA dedicated to energize the church to combat the sin of racism.

By increasing awareness about the history and nature of racism, creating opportunities for reconciliation, and promoting engagement among diverse people, we can better live out the command to love God and love our neighbors. Through grace we commit to the task of shedding our prejudices and participating in the rich blessing of human difference.
