Wrapping Up Mark and Returning to Luke (September 2024)

Program Description:
The gospel lessons from Pentecost 15 (September 15) through Pentecost 33 (November 17) come from Mark as the lectionary wraps up Year B.  With the start of Year C, the lectionary returns to Luke’s gospel as the primary source for gospel lessons in Advent and Christmas.  This course is designed to look at those Mark texts which conclude Year B and the Luke texts which open Year C in the seasons of Advent and Christmas in order to help equip preachers and teachers who will be investigating, proclaiming, and integrating these gospel lessons for the life and mission of their congregations.

Instructor:
Since 2017, the Reverend Dr. Rick Carlson has served as co-pastor of First Lutheran Church in Kearney, Nebraska in partnership with his wife, the Reverend Dr. Michelle Carlson.  Prior to being called to Kearney, Pastor Carlson first served parishes in northern Minnesota followed by a twenty-seven-year call as a professor of the New Testament at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg.  He is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond Virginia.  He is a regular contributor to Working Preacher and authored the study notes for Colossians in the Lutheran Study Bible.
