Immigration and the Nebraska Synod

A Four-Week Series

Join us for this four-week session to learn about immigration in Nebraska, what is happening currently, how churches can and cannot be involved, and how individuals can advocate for immigrants and refugees.

Each week will feature an hour (approximately) presentation followed by time for questions and answers.

March 10, 17, 24, and 31 7:00-8:30 Central Time

March 10: Lutheran Family Services will lead a panel discussion on the challenges immigrants face. They will answer questions including: what does reality look like for an immigrant, what happens when someone arrives in Nebraska, how do they get needed support, what does LFS do? They will provide insight into the needs and challenges of immigrants. They will also share that churches can provide support for immigrants and the work of LFS.

March 17: Mary Campbell and Raed AbuJries will share about ELCA’s Ammparo ministries, including the Guardian Angel program, and what it means to be a welcoming congregation, as well as what it means to be a sanctuary denomination.

March 24: Dan Bierne or the Congregational Engagement Specialist from Global Refuge will talk about working with refugees and the difference between refugees and immigrants. Information will be shared about how a refugee arrives in Nebraska, what support is provided, and how congregations can support refugees and immigrants through Global Refuge.

March 31: Immigration lawyers from the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement in Omaha will share about the current status of executive orders and what it means for immigrants and for churches in the Nebraska Synod. They will answer legal questions and how churches can and can not support immigrants.
