When you think of the Incarnation, what comes to mind for you? Perhaps a better starting question might be simply, what is the Incarnation? For a such a central concept of the faith, one that is at the heart of God’s story and particularly the seasons of Advent and Christmas, it’s one of those things we talk about as the church but perhaps never really take the time to go below the surface about. To curiously wonder what this might mean. To imagine how the Incarnation may not have just been a one-time thing, but something that happens even now as God is active and up to something in the world.
In unpacking this theme and question, the congregations of the Nebraska Synod are invited to use this resource this year which features an order of worship for mid-week Advent services for Advent 2026.
As we light the first candle, Advent begins by breaking open our expectations about how God shows up. Isaiah’s cry for God to “tear open the heavens and come down” and the surprising story of Zechariah and Elizabeth remind us that God often answers in ways we do not anticipate, yet still for our good. This week’s worship invites us to notice where our assumptions may be limiting our hope, to watch for God’s quiet but powerful stirring in unexpected places, and to let our hearts be reshaped by the promise that Emmanuel comes for all God’s people.

As we light the second candle, Advent invites us to wonder at God’s joyful “breaking in.” Through Isaiah’s promise of comfort and Mary’s astonishing yes to the angel’s news, we glimpse a God who levels valleys, lifts burdens, and draws near in unexpected ways. This week’s worship invites us to remember moments of joy in our own lives, to notice where God may be breaking in even now, and to let that deep, quiet joy shape our prayers, our conversations, and our hope.

As we light the third candle, Advent centers us in the mystery of Christ breaking into our world and into our lives. Isaiah’s promise of good news to the oppressed and Mary’s Magnificat of justice and joy remind us that the Incarnation is not an idea but God’s living presence among the lowly, the weary, and the waiting. This week’s worship invites us to watch for the in‑breaking of Christ in unexpected places, to trust that God’s power is at work beneath what looks fragile or forgotten, and to let that hope reshape how we pray, serve, and live.

As we light the fourth candle, Advent brings us to the edge of Christmas with hope breaking open in new ways. Isaiah’s promise of Immanuel and Zechariah’s song of “dawn from on high” remind us that God’s answer to fear and uncertainty is a child, a Savior who guides our feet into the way of peace. This week’s worship invites us to notice where hope is dawning in our own lives and communities, to receive God’s tender mercy in this season, and to share that hope with neighbors and creation as we prepare to welcome Christ once more.

As the nights grow longest and the world feels heaviest, this “Longest Night/Blue Christmas” service offers space to be honest about grief, weariness, and unanswered questions and to meet God there. Rooted in Scripture, song, anointing, and Holy Communion, we remember that the Word became flesh to dwell with us in our darkness and to carry our burdens with tender mercy. This quiet, candlelit liturgy invites all who are hurting, exhausted, or simply needing room to breathe to rest in the promise that Christ’s light still shines and the darkness has not overcome it.
