Returning to Matthew: Preaching and Teaching on Matthew from Advent 1 through Lent – EMMAUS, Fall 2022

Program Description

With the dawn of Year A in the Revised Common Lectionary on the First Sunday of Advent (November 27, 2022), we return to the gospel of Matthew as our core gospel focus especially from Advent 1 through Lent 1.  Indeed, of the fourteen Sundays during that span twelve of these Sundays will have gospel lessons from Matthew.  This Emmaus offering seeks to provide a brief background to the logistics behind Matthew’s gospel followed by the opening narrative and theological framework for interpreting Matthew.  After this introductory overview, the twelve Matthean texts from Advent 1 through Lent 1 would be investigated in their canonical order to help equip preachers and teachers who will investigating, proclaiming, and integrating these gospel lessons for the life and mission of their congregations.

Instructor

Since 2017, the Reverend Dr. Rick Carlson has served as co-lead pastor of First Lutheran Church in Kearney, Nebraska in partnership with his wife, the Reverend Dr. Michelle Carlson.  Prior to being called to Kearney, Pastor Carlson first served parishes in northern Minnesota followed by a twenty-seven-year call as a professor of the New Testament at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg.  He is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond Virginia.  This past year he taught two Emmaus courses on Year C Lukan texts in the lectionary for the Christmas, Epiphany, and Pentecost seasons.

Class Details

Format: This class will be offered both in-person and simultaneously online.  Power point slides will be available to those registered ahead of time.  Opportunities will be available for online participants to ask questions or provide input via Zoom. Zoom link will be sent with the power point the week of the class.

Date: Thursday, November 10, 2022, 10:00-2:30 Central/9:00-1:30 Mountain

In-person Location:  The class will be held at First Lutheran Church in Kearney, Nebraska.  The morning session will run from 10:00 a.m. to noon with refreshments provided for in-person participants prior to the start of the morning session. The afternoon session will run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.  Lunch will be available for those attending the class at First Lutheran at an additional cost of $15/person.

Target Audience: This course is for preachers wanting to go deeper exploring the context and connections of the Matthew gospel lessons from Advent 1 to Lent 1. Pastor Rick moves along at a fast pace because there he has so much to share. Participants are encouraged to review the power point prior to the class. A special thanks to Rev. Cost: Course fee is $40/person. For those participating in-person morning coffee and lunch will be provided for an additional $15/person.
