With the dawn of Year A in the Revised Common Lectionary on the First Sunday of Advent (November 27, 2022), we return to the gospel of Matthew as our core gospel focus especially from Advent 1 through Lent 1. Indeed, of the fourteen Sundays during that span twelve of these Sundays will have gospel lessons from Matthew. This Emmaus offering seeks to provide a brief background to the logistics behind Matthew’s gospel followed by the opening narrative and theological framework for interpreting Matthew. After this introductory overview, the twelve Matthean texts from Advent 1 through Lent 1 would be investigated in their canonical order to help equip preachers and teachers who will investigating, proclaiming, and integrating these gospel lessons for the life and mission of their congregations.
