PMA Convocation

Peace in the Parish and Beyond

Jesus said, “blessed are the peacemakers,” but how do we make peace in a culture—and sometimes a church—so painfully divided over so many matters? Join Rev. Dr. Rick Carlson and Rev. Juliet Focken as they help delve into what Jesus meant by peacemaking, particularly through the Gospel of Matthew, and what we can use to make peace within our homes, our parishes and beyond.

Our presenters:

Rev. Dr. Rick Carlson is a New Testament scholar known for his engaging ways of tying text to proclamation. Along with his wife, Rev. Dr. Michelle Carlson, Rev. Carlson presently serves as co-lead Pastor at First Lutheran Church in Kearney, Nebraska.  Rev. Carlson has served in parish ministry in northern Minnesota as well as serving as Professor of New Testament, Director of Internship, Candidacy Coordinator, and Director of Theological Studies at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg for 27 years.

Rev. Juliet Focken is a graduate of the ELCA Systems Academy, who uses a family systems approach to evaluate and respond to conflict within congregations and other systems.  She serves as an Assistant to the Bishop in the Nebraska Synod ELCA.
