EMMAUS: Book Discussion – ‘How to Lead When You Don’t Know Where You’re Going’

Program Description

This is a conversation for the curious. It is for leaders who are wondering how you lead an organization stuck between an ending and a new beginning. For leaders asking what do you do when the old way of doing things no longer works but a way forward is not yet clear. It is a time set apart to talk bravely with colleagues about how you lead when you don’t know where you are going. Being truthful – don’t bother to sign up if you have all the answers. This is a place for wondering, pondering, and sharing as we explore systems, call and the delightful ways change can take us to new places. Susan Beaumont’s book “How Do You Lead When You Don’t Know Where You’re Going” provides insights and tested paths to help us navigate the rough waters and lead the journey.

This is a 5-session course offered online using Zoom. Each 60-minute session will include a conversation about the assigned chapters in the book and from there we will go where the Spirit takes us.

  • Week 1 – Course overview, group connections and Chapter 1 – An Introduction to Liminality: Neither Here nor There.  Read Chapter 1 prior to class.
  • Week 2 – Chapters 2 – Leading with Presences: Holding Steady and Chapter 3 – Tending the Soul of the Institution: Finding Soul in Place
  • Week 3 – Chapter 4 – Deepening Group Discernment: Seeing What God is Up To and Chapter 5 – Shaping Institutional Memory: Tell Me Our Story
  • Week 4 – Chapter 6 – Clarifying Purpose: Who Do We Choose to Be?
  • Week 5 – Chapter 7 – Engaging Emergence: Are We There Yet? What’s next?

Instructors

Deacon Sunni and Pastor Chad are advocates for this book and after another conversation about the value of the book decided it was time to offer a book discussion through Emmaus: Lifelong Learning.

Pastor Chad is a 2nd career leader serving in his first call. He embraces continuing education and found Susan Beaumont’s book to be a gift for him in his ministry.

Deacon Sunni Richardson serves as Director for Leadership Development with the Nebraska Synod. She is an avid reader who is always looking for a group to engage in a book conversation about leadership and the church.
