Local ministers aim to relieve medical debt in Nebraska

Aurora, NE- February 7, 2020 - Medical debt in the U.S. is staggering, and in Nebraska it amounts to over $3 million. Hospitals regularly turn medical bills over to collection agencies, who buy it for about 10 cents on the dollar.

Local ministers from Aurora, Nebraska have decided to work with RIP Medical Debt ( in order to buy back medical debt in Nebraska and forgive it rather than collect it, no strings attached.

“I had heard about what RIP Medical debt has been doing to free people from their overwhelming medical debt all over the country,” said Rev. Michelle Reed, a United Methodist Pastor,  “and I immediately wanted to help people in Nebraska who are struggling. So I took the idea to our local ministerial association and they agreed that we could help people locally to improve their financial situation.”

As a result, the Hamilton County Ministerial Association, comprised of local ministers from a variety of denominations, voted to sponsor the campaign and begin the fundraising with $1,000 of donated funds that are used to help people in need.

“If each of us appeals to our churches and reaches out to the communities that we serve, I am hopeful that we can raise the $30,000 to erase all this medical debt and give people new hope for a better financial future.” says Pastor Reed.

Persons can help by donating on line at or by sending a check to RIP Medical Debt, 80 Theodore Fremd Ave, Rye, NY 10580. Please indicate your donation is for the Hamilton County Ministerial Association campaign.

Helping Nebraskans live "The Good Life"

When our ministerial association became aware of the devastating impact medical debt was having on struggling families in their communities, a powerful spiritual movement united them to action. Jesus said the two most important commandments are to love God and love our neighbors. Our goal is to eradicate medical debt carried by people who we consider our neighbors in Nebraska. That amounts to $3 million dollars over the entire state.

Through our denominational and interfaith connections, as well as support from every local church in Nebraska, we intend to raise $30,000 in order to completely eliminate this crushing debt. The Hamilton County Ministerial Association has begun this campaign with a $1,000 donation from funds that are raised to assist people in our county. Paralyzing medical debt, the #1 cause of bankruptcy in the US, has shattered lives as well as credit scores further exacerbating people's plight. Imagine if every ministerial and interfaith association, church and donomination united to help!

Here's how it works: when a hospital turns a medical bill over for collection, they actually sell that bill to the collection agency for about 10 cents on the dollar. RIP Medical Debt buys that discounted debt from the collection agency, using donated money, and forgives it — the person who was once weighed down with crushing medical debt is free - no strings attached! The group targets the medical debts of persons who earn less than 200 times the federal poverty level; whose debts are greater than 5% of their annual income; or whose debts are greater than their assets.

Paying this debt for those in need is a game-changer — creating the chance for a new financial start. As we move towards the celebration of Easter, we invite you to help create new life where there seemed to be none, hope where there has been despair, and a loud "YES" to those who are praying for help.
