Change is difficult to navigate even at the best of times, leading to feelings of anxiety, distress, and polarization. Even positive change demands that we take a stance of curiosity and learning – both of which can cause us to feel unsettled. All of these feelings are heightened when the change we are facing is one of crisis. This presentation proposes a model for understanding change (and crisis) in the congregational context and offers a vision and concrete tools for how to navigate this change with a sense of purpose and hope.

Plenary Workshop:Becoming a People of Healing & Hope - Betty Pries
Purpose & Description: During times of crisis and change it is easy to lose our trust in one another and to wonder when (or if) we will be ourselves again – or whether we even want to be ourselves again! This workshop explores how congregational leaders can support their communities of faith in a manner that allows them to become a people of healing and hope – even in crisis. Finding the intersection point between loving the church unconditionally and leading it to a place of greater health, leaders find language and models for guiding the congregation through challenges, polarization, and division.

Betty Pries has over 26 years of experience coaching, mediating, training, facilitating and consulting. She specialized in working with complex challenges, supporting leaders and their organization to be at their best. She has worked with national and international organizations. Co-Founder and CEO at Credence & Co., she helps clients engage in tough, meaningful, and important conversations, set directions, and achieve positive organizational change. She is a Chartered Mediator with ADR Institute of Canada, a regular instructor at the University of Waterloo. She completed a PD at the Free University Amsterdam (VU) on conflict transformation.
