Lifelong Learning is the Lutheran Way

The Lutheran Church is built on Martin Luther’s academic work and his continued learning as he studied scripture and engaged in the work of the church. Somewhere along the way we morphed into a “graduate and done” mindset. Two examples quickly come to mind – confirmation and education for church leaders. In both cases, we celebrate with graduation festivities such as cake, gifts, parties, and grand ceremonies. We send a message of completion and an implied message of ‘you know all there is to know’. WRONG! We are called to be lifelong learners!

Pastors, deacons, and parish ministry associates (PMAs) are expected to participate in annual continuing education opportunities. Congregations are expected to provide financial support which may include having a supply preacher a Sunday or two. And, Congregation Councils are expected to support, encourage and build on the learning opportunities provided to the leader. Unfortunately, the partnership of continuing education often has holes or drop-out points. Budgets don’t support the process or the time away becomes a sore point. Leaders are busy and time away is hard. Leaders who feel equipped may not see the need to invest the time and energy in continuing education. Thus, the result of these holes and drop-out points is that lifelong learning is hampered.

How, Then, Will I Lead? is a Nebraska Synod intensive, introspective program for pastors, deacons, parish ministry associates, and other leaders/staff. It is helping participants lead out of their God-given identity guided by the Holy Spirit. Using three world-class professional assessments and individual coaching, participants will learn and practice a multitude of communication tools and experience a safe place for hard, honest self-reflection with colleague support.

Now is the time to apply for the fall 2022 cohort. Dates and details are found at https://sites.google.com/view/how-then-will-i-lead/home. Participants must be present for each of the 4 sessions. An online option is not available. Space is limited.
