    Bishop Brian Mass

    Biography:

    The Rev. Brian Maas serves as Bishop of the Nebraska Synod, ELCA.

    A graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University and Yale Divinity School with a certificate of studies from Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Bishop Maas was ordained in 1992. He served three congregations: Emmanuel Lutheran, Tekamah, Nebraska; Immanuel Lutheran, Kansas City, Missouri; and First Lutheran Church, Lincoln, Nebraska. He was elected Bishop of the Nebraska Synod in June 2012. Bishop Maas and his family lives in Lincoln.

    Biography:

    Ted Asay, Director of Development

    After spending 28 years in the the business sector, Ted has worked as a development officer in non-profit fundraising for the last 13 years. He believes that people want to make a difference with their resources and that when a relationship is built, and an ask is made, they are truly grateful to give. Ted feels blessed to work in a faith based organization because of the strong connection it has to his spiritual journey. He enjoys spending time with his family, traveling the world, time spent near water and creating all forms of artwork.

    Biography:

    Rev. Juliet Hampton, Assistant to the Bishop

    Rev. Juliet Hampton is a life long Lutheran that grew up in the eastern United States and did undergraduate and graduate work in Special Education.  After teaching Special Education at a private boarding school near NYC she moved to Gettysburg to attend seminary.  She did her First Call in Genoa, NE and now works with 80 ELCA congregations in eastern NE as one of three Assistants to the Bishop for the Nebraska Synod.  On staff her three areas of priority are congregational relations, call process and First Call Theological Education.  She lives in the Fremont area with her young son.

    Diane Harpster

    Biography:

    Diane Harpster, Administrative Assistant to the Bishop

    Diane has served on synod staff since October 2012, and prior to that served for sixteen years on the staff of her congregation, Sinai, Fremont.  She and her husband, Ron, live in Fremont, and have two adult sons (and a daughter-in-law) and a Goldendoodle, Andy.  Watercolor painting, coloring, reading, quiet time and coffee on the deck - preferably one with a lake view - and travel whenever possible are some of her interests.  She is a life-long Nebraskan, certified spiritual director, chocolate lover and HGTV-watcher, and enjoys the opportunity to meet and serve the people and congregations throughout the Nebraska Synod.

    Michele Herrick, Part time Support Staff

    Michele joined the Nebraska Synod in May 2016 as part-time admin support/receptionist. Prior to working at the Synod, she was a church secretary and an elementary school teacher.
    She has a BSBA from UNK and a teaching certificate from College of St. Mary’s. 
    Michele enjoys spending time with her family, reading, genealogy, and yoga.

  • Lisa Kramme
    Lisa Kramme

    Biography:

    Lisa Kramme, Director of Faith Formation

    Lisa Kramme serves as the Director of Faith Formation with the Nebraska Synod ELCA.  In that role she works with ministry events such as the Lutheran Youth of Nebraska (LYON) Assembly, the Middle School Gathering, and the Journey, a week-long experience in the summers when there is not an ELCA Youth Gathering.  Beyond youth ministry, Lisa is interested in supporting congregations in their focus on faith formation of people who are children through elders, and she is a certified spiritual director.  As a hobby, Lisa tells the stories of Hans Christian Anderson through the Nebraska Humanities Speakers Bureau.  She loves stories—telling them and listening to them, and she loves questions—asking them and living them.  Lisa lives in Fremont with her husband Keith.  They have two children and a son-in-law, Mattie, Jesse and Taylor

    Biography:

    Stephanie Lusienski, Administrator for Finance & Development

    Stephanie has served on synod staff since October 2008, and prior to that served for 5 years on the staff of her congregation, American Lutheran Church, Ashland.
    She and her husband, Jerry live in Ashland, and have 3 grown children. Her interests are reading, traveling and gardening, or just about any activity that requires being outside. “I love meeting and talking with people throughout the Nebraska Synod. I am humbly honored to be a part of a faith tradition that serves others and welcomes everyone, no matter their faith, ethnicity, or gender."

  • Carol Mapa
    Carol Mapa

    Biography:

    Rev. Carol Mapa, PMA Administrator

    Rev. Carol T. Mapa was ordained into Word and Sacrament in May 2006.  Prior to her ordination, she was active in serving the church in camping and retreat ministry, campus ministry, youth ministry as well as working in the public school system.  Her undergraduate work was at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.  She received a M.A. from Wartburg Seminary in 1987; returning to studies for ordination from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.  

    After living in Rapid City, SD for 24 years, she and her husband, Rev. Jon Mapa, followed calls to Gothenburg, NE where, Pastor Carol serves Zion Lutheran Church in rural Gothenburg in a part-time call.  She serves as the PMA Administrator for the NE Synod, ELCA.  

    Rev. Carol and Jon have one daughter, Catherine, who lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. In her spare time, Pastor Carol enjoys gardening, reading, movies, walking/hiking and when she has a chance kayaking.

    Rev. Steve Meysing

    Biography:

    Rev. Steve Meysing, Assistant to the Bishop

    Ordained in 1996 and serving Nebraska Synod since October 2012, Pastor Steve’s calls have been in diverse settings--multi-point rural, suburban with multiple staff, urban core, the Canadian Arctic, and northwest Nebraska. His previous career was as an editor and journalist for consumer and Swedish-American publications in the US and Canada. Benedictine spirituality, ecumenism, transformational ministry, and nurturing collaboration and new leaders are among his ministry interests. He enjoys learning about cultures and languages, as well as time outdoors for camping, horseback riding, biking, paddling a canoe or kayak, and watching rodeos. His family’s Nebraskan roots originate in the Gothenburg area from the 1890s.

  • Rev. Megan Morrow
    Rev. Megan Morrow

    Biography:

    Rev. Megan Morrow, Assistant to the Bishop

    Pastor Megan Morrow grew up in Lincoln challenged by the questions, “How does God want me to serve others? What role do I play in the Body of Christ?” The questions led her to degrees in Music Education and Music Therapy from the University of Kansas while active in Lutheran Campus Ministry, then to serve as a music therapist in public schools near Minneapolis, Minnesota for a few years before going to seminary at Luther in St. Paul. She served her internship in Philadelphia, PA in an urban congregation, and 3 calls in Nebraska: Adullam/Immanuel at Bertrand, Southwood in Lincoln and Grace in Lexington, prior to coming on synod staff in 2014. Helping people and congregations hear God’s grace in Christ for them, discover their gifts and discern how God desires them to serve others is foundational to Pastor Megan’s call. She enjoys biking, ethnic food, traveling, meeting people from all over, a good sense of humor, the arts and hearing stories. She lives in Lincoln with her father, and enjoys hanging out with her son, Charles.

  • Brenda Rivas
    Brenda Rivas

    Biography:

    Brenda Rivas, Communications Manager

    As the youngest child in a very creative family, Brenda discovered a love for art and creative writing at an early age. Growing up in Massachusetts provided her with many opportunities to create art and literary works for school, exhibitions, and publishing.

    She traveled far from home to further her education at Iowa State University, where she received a bachelor’s of science in Scientific Communication and Illustration. She decided to stay in the Midwest and moved to Chicago, where she attended graduate school at DePaul University. She received a master’s of art in New Media Studies at DePaul and lived in Chicago for about ten years.  Most of her time in Chicago was spent gaining professional experience in marketing design and communications, and volunteering with educational non-profits. 

    Brenda taught Spanish and computer literacy to children and adults, and volunteered at summer educational camps for the children of migrant workers. In 2012 she moved to Omaha in hopes of attaining an additional degree. Before joining the Synod, she gained more experience in educational and marketing multimedia and communications at Bellevue University. She enjoys writing, designing, photography, and video editing for both professional and personal purposes.  She also enjoys volunteering and reading in her spare time.

  • Rev. Rebecca Sheridan
    Rev. Rebecca Sheridan

    Biography:

    Rev. Rebecca Sheridan, Synod Evangelist

    Rebecca Sheridan was baptized at Lord of Love Lutheran Church in Omaha, and attended there with her family growing up. She would eventually attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls to study English and secondary education. Following her graduation from college, she participated in the ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission program. As part of this program, she lived in Obišovce, Slovakia for one year. During that time, she served at several Lutheran churches and ministered among the local refugee population that lived there. After her year abroad, Rebecca studied at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, where she completed her theological studies and met her husband, Rich. As part of her seminary education, she interned at Bethel Lutheran Church in St. Louis, gaining experience in both parish and campus ministry while there. From 2011 to 2014, she served as the pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church of Swede Home in Stromsburg and Zion Lutheran Church in Benedict, Nebraska. She comes from a musical family, sings, and plays trumpet and piano, too.  Rebecca serves as co-pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church in Omaha with her husband, Rich.  She and Rich also serve as the Nebraska Synod Evangelists.  In this role, they relate to Mission Field Nebraska ministries including new starts, work with congregations on evangelism and outreach strategies, and facilitate congregational renewal including Transformational Ministry. In addition, Rebecca serves as staff liaison to the Nebraska Synod Justice Committee.  Rebecca and Rich have two young daughters, Erin and Grace.

    Rev. Rich Sheridan

    Biography:

    Rev. Rich Sheridan, Synod Evangelist

    Rich Sheridan was born in northern New Jersey. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dover, NJ, and attended there with his family growing up. He would eventually attend Rutgers University to study psychology and German. As part of his undergraduate work, he spent one year abroad at the Universität Konstanz in Konstanz, Germany. He then moved on to the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, where he completed his theological studies and met his wife, Rebecca. While there, Rich also obtained a master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Chicago. He is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in the State of Nebraska and has provided psychotherapy to people living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and incarceration. Rich currently serves as co-Synod Evangelist with the Nebraska Synod and co-pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church alongside his wife, Pastor Rebecca Sheridan. He is the proud father of two young daughters, Erin and Grace. Rich hails from a musical family, and enjoys making both vocal and instrumental music.

    Timothy Siburg, Deacon

    Biography:

    Deacon Timothy Siburg, Director for Stewardship

    Deacon Timothy was consecrated as a deacon in 2016. He has previously served on staff and in leadership roles for congregations, nonprofits, startups, and on other synod staff, in Minnesota and Washington. Areas of interest in ministry include: stewardship; leadership; mission; generosity; gratitude; writing; and cultivating and sharing stories of ministry in action. Timothy is available to preach, lead worship (outside of the sacraments), workshops and discussions, meet for conversations over hot chocolate while you drink coffee, etc. Originally from Washington state, he is a Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks fan, and now resides in Fontanelle with his wife Allison (who serves as pastor at Salem Lutheran in Fontanelle), and their cat Buddy. Together, they love to: root on their favorite teams; travel and see new things; go for walks; and play and make music on piano (Timothy) and cello (Allison). Timothy holds an MA in Management (Drucker School, Claremont Graduate University), MA in Congregational Mission & Leadership (Luther Seminary), and a BA in Economics & Religion (Pacific Lutheran University).   • Connie Stover, Deacon
    Connie Stover, Deacon

    Biography:

    Deacon Connie Stover

    Connie Stover is a native Nebraskan and lifelong Lutheran who currently resides in Kearney. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master of Science Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She was originally commissioned by the LCA as a Lay Professional and is now serving as a Deacon of the ELCA. She received her certification for spiritual direction in 2012. Her professional history includes teaching high school English and Speech, serving an ELCA congregation as the Director of Education and Youth Ministry, and counseling in a group practice agency. She previously served as an Assistant to the Bishop of the Nebraska Synod for ten years before accepting the call to become the Director of Seeking the Spirit Within in 2014. Connie’s favorite vacation destination is Colorado, where her son and daughter-in-law reside. She is grateful to have celebrated her most recent birthday with her 93-year-old mother, who also lives in Kearney.

    Deacon Connie Stover, the Director of Seeking the Spirit Within, is available to accept invitations to be present in congregations and/or cluster pastor groups to share with them the mission of Seeking the Spirit Within and the ministry of spiritual direction.  She is open to bringing the message for worship and/or leading adult forums. We do request that mileage reimbursement and compensation for pulpit supply be directed to Seeking the Spirit Within, as our budget does not cover these expenses.

    Kathy was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She is a recent graduate from University of Nebraska-Omaha in Business Administration with concentrations in Marketing and Management. She is a Sigma Kappa Beta Omega alumni member and she will pursue her MBA in Fall 2018. Kathy has joined the Nebraska Synod team to learn more about what she can do for herself and the community positively.

  • Rev. Kristen Van Stee
    Rev. Kristen Van Stee

    Biography:

    Rev. Kristen Van Stee, Associate to the Bishop

    Pastor Kristen Van Stee graduated from Roanoke College in Salem Virginia (the Lutheran college of Virginia) in 2007 having majored in both History and Spanish. With the blessings of the Virginia candidacy committee, she enrolled at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia South Carolina, graduating in 2011. She was ordained September 21st, 2013 and served as the solo pastor of Christ’s Lutheran Church in Davenport and St. James Lutheran Church in Edgar. After nearly four years shepherding the wonderful people of those communities, she resigned her call there in order to serve as the half-time Associate Pastor at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne and the half-time Associate of the Bishop for congregational mobility in the north-east. Pastor Kristen has chaired for several years the Global Mission Committee for the synod and was blessed to be able to visit our companion synod IELU in Argentina last fall. She owns a 7-year old pit-mix Maddie, loves to travel, and play video games. Her immediate family lives in Virginia and she always makes time to travel home to see them several times a year and drink sweet tea.
